University of Kerbala discusses a master’s thesis on neonatal pain care

 A master’s thesis was discussed at the College of Nursing at the University of Kerbala, entitled “The Effectiveness of the Educational Program on Nurses’ Knowledge of Newborn Pain Care” by the student (Esraa Faisal Abbas), a postgraduate student at the College of Nursing at University of Kerbala for the academic year 2020-2021, which is part of the requirements for obtaining a master’s degree in Nursing Sciences, which was supervised by Prof. Dr. Khamis Bandar Obaid, Head of the Pediatric Nursing Department at the College of Nursing, the study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational program on nurses’ knowledge regarding neonatal pain care, as a pilot study was conducted at Kerbala Children’s Teaching Hospital in the holy city of Kerbala Between the period from 15 October 2021 to 12 July 2022, during which two groups of (25) nurses were selected from the study group and (25) nurses from the control group depending on the study criteria. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22, the results of the study indicated that there were highly statistically significant differences between the periods before the program and after the application of the educational program. In the study group, about (64%) of the nurses expressed a poor level of knowledge in the pre-test period of measurement regarding neonatal pain management. While after applying the educational program, about (72%) of them expressed a good level of knowledge in the post-test period for measurement. The study found that there were no statistically significant differences between the effectiveness of the educational program and the nurses’ age, gender, educational level, years of experience, and their access to training courses on neonatal pain management Pain care for newborns, The study concluded, that the majority of the participating nurses were female, school nurses, and did not participate in training courses on neonatal pain care, and their experience was less than five years, and the high percentage was from 20-29 years, and the program led to a clear improvement in the nurses’ knowledge With regard to how to manage neonatal pain after applying the educational program, the researcher recommended in her letter that neonatal pain should be included in nursing curricula for all educational levels.
