ABSTRACT

Background: Diarrheal diseases are still a major public health problem

especially in developing countries, due to their high morbidity & mortality
rates, moreover the largest number of deaths with diarrheal diseases are due
to persistent diarrheal states. We attempted to evaluate the size of the
problem in our infants, and assess risk factors.

Objectives: the study aimed to identify the most common risk factors for

diarrheal disease among children less than three months admitted to
Pediatric teaching hospital in Karbala and to find the relationship between
some demographic characteristics and risk factors of diarrhea between
children under three months.

Method and materials: A descriptive quantitative study was conducted

to identify risk factors of diarrhea for child under three month in pediatric
teaching hospital in holy Karbala city. The study was initiated from
15;October; 2017; to 22;February ;2018. The data were collected through
the utilization of structured questionnaire and by mean of interviewing
technique with the subjects who were individually interviewed at pediatric
teaching hospital in holy Karbala city. This part of study instrument
represent the demographic data consist of (7) items, which include age,
living of education for child mother, occupation of child mother, residence
place, type of family, economic status, type of feeding. Risk factors of
diarrhea for child under three month was scored with (2) for yes response
and(1) for no response.

Results: These findings in table (1) indicated that the most of children

were in age group was 61-90 months old (44 %), 35 mothers of the sample
their Residency in urban were represented (70 %). Most of them sufficient
economic status were represented (48%), Educational level was Read &
Write represented (44% ), the majority of mothers were Housewife in
living status (98 %), the most of these mothers use bottle feeding were
